about

This period saw Oliver move away from the social and political themes and eclectic styles of his early work and towards personal and romantic concerns and more stripped-down, often acoustic arrangements. The shadow of Elliott Smith looms over many of the songs in their quiter vocal delivery and tales of love and intimacy not quite achieved. Some describe the plights of friends and colleagues - an ill-matched and doomed marriage in "All The People", a destructive infatuation observed from the sidelines in "I Bow Out". Elsewhere is a tongue-in-cheek description of a "makeover" in the name of enhanced desirability (the A&R-tipped "Progress"), and a frank account of a joyless one-night stand ("Softened And Numbed"). This chronological compilation can be seen as a kind of "Pre-War Years" as it foreshadows the themes and sounds of his first proper release.
