about

This compilation documents Oliver's early period as a prolific young bedroom artist producing stylistically varied and outward looking rock/pop songs which are more akin to his current Worldview project than the acoustic-flavoured introspective singer-songwriter fare that followed. Here are tracks which first turned the heads of some music industry A&R types, notably the Beatlesque harmonies and Brian Wilson-influenced kitchen sink arrangement of "You'll Never Know" and the R&B flavoured, Sly Stone-indebted "Armchair". Other highlights include a clutch of songs inspired by travel - on the arrival of capitalism in Eastern Europe ("Sweet Victory"), on the allure of the US and the American way ("Made It To The Top"), and a Dylan-influenced Dublin-set romantic tale, "Just Not Close Enough". The angst of the solitary struggling artist is expressed in "Black Waves", "Walk This World" and "Can't Find My Way". And meanwhile, if Stevie Wonder were to pen a finger-wagging missive to misguided BNP activists it might sound like "Pulling Your Strings", and if Prince were to read Pilger and get incensed about Western economic imperialism, he might knock out something along the lines of "The New Crusaders". All produced between the ages of 19 and 20, and ordered chronologically, these tracks represent something of an early peak in in Oliver's output.
